How to Get Your Home Heating Oil Furnace Ready for Winter

The first hard freeze usually shows up before anyone is ready for it. The thermostat calls, the burner that has been quiet since April clicks, and you stand at the top of the basement stairs listening for it to catch. Most years it does. The years it doesn't tend to be the coldest nights, when every oil-heat service company in the county is already three days behind.

Almost none of that outcome is decided in the moment. Getting an oil furnace or boiler ready for winter happens in September and October, and it means paying attention to both the equipment and the fuel that sat through a long, humid summer. Here is the order to work in.

What does an oil furnace need to be ready for winter?

A home heating oil system needs four things before winter: a professional burner tune-up scheduled ahead of the season, a tank kept above one-quarter full, clean and stable fuel inside that tank, and clear airflow through the filters and vents. The tune-up belongs to a technician. The rest is homeowner work.

Massachusetts publishes a consumer tip sheet on oil heat maintenance, and it leads with the tune-up: the burner should get an annual tune-up and cleaning, and the best time to do it is before the heating season begins (Mass.gov consumer tip sheet). Booking early is worth the calendar reminder, because oil-heat service schedules fill as soon as the weather turns.

Why the fuel side matters takes one detail about how these systems work. The pump pulls oil from the tank, pushes it through a filter and a nozzle, and atomizes it into a fine mist that mixes with air at the burner head. That mist is what carries the flame. Anything that disturbs the spray pattern, and water, sludge, and a worn nozzle all do, shows up as a burner that struggles, smokes, or locks out. Soot is why the cleaning matters. Incomplete combustion can leave soot on heat-transfer surfaces, and that layer acts as insulation in the one place you want heat to move efficiently. The system may still run, but more of the heat from the flame can go up the flue instead of into the house.

The nozzle is another routine service item. Its tiny internal passages and precisely designed spray pattern have a major effect on how well the burner atomizes the oil. Deposits, contamination, damage, or changes in nozzle performance can interfere with that process, which is why annual nozzle replacement is common practice and is recommended by major nozzle manufacturers. It is an inexpensive part with an outsized effect on combustion.

Worth being clear about the limits. A tune-up services the equipment. It does not automatically correct problems with the fuel sitting in the tank. A technician can leave you with a clean, properly adjusted burner while water, sludge, sediment, or unstable fuel remains on the other end of the fuel line. Getting ready for winter means paying attention to both.

How do you test your heating system before the cold hits?

Give the system a trial run before you actually need it. Raise the thermostat above room temperature and let the burner run long enough to confirm that it starts normally and the house is receiving heat. If you have forced-air heat, check or replace the air filter, vacuum the registers, and make sure furniture, rugs, or other objects are not blocking the supply and return vents. Clear clutter and combustible material away from the heating equipment as well.

Do this on a mild September or October afternoon. A burner that will not start or will not stay running when it is 60 degrees outside is a scheduled service call. The same problem at 10 degrees is an emergency, and the difference between them is a few weeks of lead time.

On a forced-air system, the housekeeping matters more than it sounds like it should. A dirty filter restricts airflow, while blocked supply or return registers can keep the system from moving heated air through the house the way it was designed to. This is also a good time to look at the thermostat schedule. Why does letting the tank run low cause winter breakdowns?

That does not mean the burner pickup physically moves closer to the bottom as the fuel level drops. It means an older tank may already contain water, rust, sediment, and degraded fuel products at the bottom, and operating with very little usable fuel leaves less margin between the fuel you want and the contamination you do not. Keeping the tank comfortably above empty also gives you some protection against simply running out of oil during a cold stretch.

The material on the tank bottom can come from several places. Water can enter through condensation or other sources and settle beneath the heating oil. Internal tank corrosion can contribute rust and sediment. Over time, fuel can also oxidize and form insoluble degradation products, while microbial contamination can develop where water is present. Together, those materials can produce the dark bottom contamination homeowners generally refer to as heating oil sludge.

A delivery can complicate the problem because incoming oil can stir up material that had been sitting on the bottom. If enough contamination gets suspended in the fuel, some of it may eventually reach the filter or burner. So if a burner begins having fuel-flow or filter problems shortly after a delivery, tank-bottom contamination is one possibility worth telling the service technician about.
